The Power of the Human Voice
The Voyager Golden Record is a phonograph record included in the two Voyager spacecraft launched in 1977. It contains sounds and images selected to portray the diversity of life and culture on Earth. It is intended for any intelligent extraterrestrial life form, or far future humans, that may find it as a message of the human nation to other civilizations. The contents of the record were selected for NASA by a committee chaired by Carl Sagan of Cornell University.
This song is recorded on the golden CDs and sent out of space with the two Voyagers. It is a traditional Bulgarian folk song “Излел е Делю хайдутин” (“Izlel je Delyo Hajdutin”) performed by Valya Balkanska. It is amazing and unbelievable how the song embraces everything that Bulgaria is about: a land of almost 1,400 years of history, perished empires, wild forests, mighty mountain peaks, and abundant valleys; a land of magic, golden treasures and mysticism; a land of supernatural symbiosis of drama, beauty and grandeur. I hope one day you get to visit my country and enjoy its inspiring spirits.
About The Mystery of Bulgarian Voices
“The Bulgarian folk music is unique in Europe for its “asymmetrical” rhythms, where the musical time is not split in even beats, but in longer and shorter ones. Bulgarian vocals are said to be “open-throated”, though this is somewhat of a misnomer. Singers actually focus their voices in a way that gives the sound a distinctive “edge”, and makes the voice carry over long distances.”
