Facing the Reality of Our Time
“In this video by Riley Morton, photographer Chris Jordan discusses his Midway Project; a fine art photography series documenting the tragic phenomenon of the death of the local albatross population due to excessive intake of plastic from the Pacific Garbage Patch.”
I watched this video shared by my good friend Lora who is one of the greenest activists on Earth. You see, she is a vegetarian, did voluntary work in South Africa, is a member of Red Cross, and so on - a kind person, doing her best to make people aware of the problems that our planet is facing nowadays and how we all together can fight to save our nature, to save our animals, to save ourselves.
And then there’s me –
I am not an activist, I never really had anything to do with Greenpeace and never was a member of any life-saving organization,
and I honestly believe my purpose in life is slightly different than that. But I am not ignorant of our planet. I am a responsible person and I know what the consequences of my actions are for my surroundings – living and non-living.
People have made it very easy for all of us to help our planet be a better place
– to save energy, to recycle, to chip in with very little to make big contributions for inequality people. It is so simple that it’s hurting my soul and heart that we cannot manage to even do the least of the least. All I do is so so so simple – turning off the lights in rooms when I am not there, recycling my garbage, saving clothes to give them to homeless people, trying not to overuse resources like water and heating at home, and sending a text worth 1EURO to help orphans. This is the very least that all of us can do so WHY are we not doing it? Why are we using the resources of our planet as if they are endless, why are we abusing the people around us and expecting to live wonderful calm lives as a result?
Why if we give nothing, we expect everything in return?
I am not a green activist and I have not done much for our planet and its people. But it scares me that even the least we can, we still do not do and it’s incomprehensible to my mind – when did we all become so selfish and cold? I remember very well a quote from Mark Twain I read as I child with moral on delusional expectations:
The world doesn’t owe you anything. It was here first.
What we derive from Mr. Twain’s profound words is nothing else but that casually throwing a lighter away in the sea and expecting it to magically disappear into the void is obviously and impossible scenario. The video says the rest and I hope a different kind of feeling, an inspiring and proactive one, will start ticking in your hearts after seeing it.
